Rhinestone, acrylic, oil and enamel on wood panel
A brightly colored, fragmented interior scene depicts a hallway and adjacent rooms with patterned floors and walls adorned with numerous framed pictures. The composition is a collage of geometric shapes and perspectives. This work was inspired by Mickalene Thomas’s 2011 residency at the house and gardens of the French Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840–1926) in Giverny, France (see illustration). Thomas responded strongly to the colors Monet selected for the rooms of his house, the Mickalene Thomas (American, born 1971). Monet's Salle a Manger Jaune, 2012. Rhinestone, acrylic, oil and enamel on wood panel, 108 x 144 x 2 in. (274.3 x 365.8 x 5.1 cm). Brooklyn Museum, A. Augustus Healy Fund, 2012.73a-b. © Mickalene Thomas. Courtesy Lehmann Maupin
