Asuka period, 7th century
Earthenware
A fragment of an earthenware sculpture depicts a face with closed eyes and a grimacing mouth. The fragment shows part of the hair on the right side. Clay statues were enshrined in prominent temples of the Asuka period (593–710). They are fragile but are easy to shape and paint with pigment. These fragments retain traces of red and white pigments. Findspot: Found at Tachibana Temple, Nara
