6th–7th century
Clay wall with pigment
A seated figure in red robes is depicted in a frontal view against a background with colorful arcs. The figure's hands are clasped in their lap. This mural was probably from part of a wall in a Buddhist temple in Hotan, western China. It features a buddha forming a sacred symbol called a [mudra] with his hands. His head and body radiate light, a sign of spiritual enlightenment. Origin: Hotan, China
