die-cut and inlaid paulownia wood on paper
Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum
Marquetry of thin Paulownia wood veneer in a vining foliate pattern. Each panel is three repeats in length by two repeats wide, while the wood forming the background rotates 90 degrees in each neighboring square forming a checkerboard pattern. The grain of the foliate motif runs perpendicular to the background veneer. The veneer has been given a walnut stain. Gift of The Maya Romanoff Corporation
