Etching
In this double portrait Rembrandt depicts himself and his wife Saskia. The DMA collection has a total of four impressions of this print, each of which is a different state—a printing term used to designate a difference in the changes made to a copperplate in between printing. This impression of Self-Portrait with Saskia is the first state of four, also notated as I/IV. The only difference between state I/IV and II/IV for this print is the accidental stroke above Saskia’s right eyebrow seen in state I/IV. In state II/IV, the slipped stroke is burnished off the plate which can be seen in object 1967.1.2. in the DMA’s collection. stora
