Vlaminck painted this view of Bougival, a town northwest of Paris along the Seine River, at the height of his powers as a Fauve. Bougival had long been associated with the Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet and PierreAuguste Renoir, who frequently painted this popular leisure destination. Here it serves as the backdrop for Vlaminck’s riotous anti-naturalistic palette and animated handling of paint. on-view
