1631/1636; printed c. 1710-1750
Etching
This print is unusual in that it was printed using two of Rembrandt’s copperplates: Self-Portrait with Saskia (see DMA impression 1967.1.1) and The Artist’s Mother with her Hand on her Chest. It is speculated that Jean de Bary printed this impression in the early eighteenth century. Although scholars previously believed that Saskia had been burnished out of the Self-Portrait with Saskia plate and then replaced with a portrait of Rembrandt’s mother, recent scholarship has determined that Jean de Bary skillfully inked two original Rembrandt plates to create this unique impression. The overlapping of the plates can be seen in the area
