Poplars, Pink Effect belongs to a series of 24 paintings that Monet began in 1891. As with his other serial paintings, such as those depicting haystacks or the Rouen Cathedral, Monet returned to the motif day after day, recording its appearance at different times and in varying light and weather conditions. Although begun outdoors, most of the paintings were finished in the studio, as the artist delicately balanced aesthetic consistency with a faithful representation of nature.
