Oil on canvas
In Continuous Lines, the brushstrokes are so flat and uniform that, in its perfection, the painting almost looks machine made. Balla was a leader of Futurism, an avant-garde Italian movement active in the early 1900s that glorified the constant motion and energy of modern life. Here, Balla harnessed the Futurist aesthetic of dynamic lines to create an abstract image that was likely intended as decoration in his villa in Rome. The unique frame, although not original to the piece, resembles the type of frame that Balla designed to complement his paintings. storage
