Terracotta
This is a fragment of a terracotta vase decorated in the red-figure technique. It depicts several figures in various poses, suggesting a narrative scene. The fragment shows decorative bands and figures in profile. Five fragments, which make up most of the front of a small calyx krater. The decoration is divided into two zones. Above: sacrifice of a ram, and a fight between warriors. Below: two young warriors carrying the body of a fallen male, towards a grieving youth. For more details, see individual records. Based on comparison with a red-figure stamnos in Basel (BS 477), which shows Ajax or Achilles fighting Hektor over the body of a ram labelled PAT (for Patroklos), a similar narrative has been identified here, with the fight above and the body of Patroklos being brought to Achilles below.
