A man with a beard and mustache wears a fur-lined cap and robe. He is shown from the chest up, looking towards the viewer. Like other artists of his time, Rembrandt used real models to sit for imaginary portraits. This model reappears in many prints and paintings by Rembrandt and other artists in his circle.
