A woman in traditional Japanese attire stands in a boat, holding a fan and a small drum. She is adorned with a tall hat and flowing robes, with weeping willow branches hanging overhead. Shirabyōshi were female entertainers who dressed as men to sing and dance, typically using drums or flutes as instruments. The profession became popular in the 12th century and had disappeared by the 14th century. Gallery G223 Bequest of Richard P. Gale
