Ceramics - Celadon
A celadon vase with a narrow neck and bulbous body is decorated with dark brown underglaze iron-brown painted motifs of peonies and leaves. The vase has a light brown glaze with visible crackling. This prunus vase has a voluptuous shoulder and upper body, and a lower body that tapers slightly outward, giving an overall impression of resilience. Goryeo celadon with an iron-brown underglaze design is usually yellow-brownish in color as it is produced by abruptly blocking the oxygen supply to the furnace and chimney, and baking it for a short period of time by burning an abundance of firewood. The realistic depiction of the three peonies covering the body is the result of a skilled and animated touch. Incised lines are again applied to the iron-brown to depict flowers, leaves, and branches. Location: Goryeo Dynasty1 Accession nu
