Watercolor on ivory
A miniature oval portrait depicts a man with long, dark, curly hair, wearing a white collar, a dark blue bow tie, and a brown jacket over a red waistcoat. The portrait is set within a dark, wooden, circular frame. The younger son of the orinthologist assisted father in making the illustrations of the birds and animals of America for his publications. In 1837 he married Maria Rebecca. Audubon travelled a great deal with or for his father to Labrador, Texas, and England. Beginning in 1840 he frequently exhibited landscapes, portraits, and bird or animal paintings at the National Academy of Design, of which he was an associate member from 1848 until his death. Gift of Mr. Thomas W. Streeter Object number 1957.38
