Sardonyx; Cameo
A carved cameo depicts a profile of a woman's head wearing a headdress and draped fabric. The carving is oval-shaped and rendered in a two-toned stone. Sommerville: Sard. Juno. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case L. Vermeule: Sard. Cameo. (Unmounted). Diademed veiled bust of a woman facing to right. Sommerville terms her Juno, but the design may be copied from an early Imperial cameo of an empress such as Livia represented under the guise of Juno. Neo-Classic. 29-128-202 Bequest of Maxwell Sommerville, 1904
