majolica veelkleurig beschilderd in de glazuur
A circular majolica dish depicts a biblical scene with a figure falling from a horse, surrounded by a crowd on horseback and a distant city. Cherubs and divine light are shown in the sky above. This Antwerp charger would originally have been some 50 cm in diameter. When the rim around the central scene was damaged, it was removed and replaced by a brass mount. Such a dish would never have been used for eating, but would have been displayed on a wall as a painting in ceramic. The absence of the rim now reinforces the dish’s resemblance to a painting.
