Oil and encaustic on canvas
One of the first American artists to practice abstraction, Dove once wrote himself a note, “Work at a point where abstraction and reality meet.” This is the essence of many of his paintings, in which a recognizable motif is flattened and simplified into colored shapes. He also often made his own frames; here, he signed the frame as well as the painting. Gift of the Estate of Saul and Helen Schluger Object number 98.79
