Gouache and India ink on board
There is a looseness and immediacy to Calder's works on paper that is distinct from the crisp linear quality of his sculpture. Varying degrees of opacity and fluid drips provide him with another language of expression. The relationship of humans to both natural and man-made forms is a constant theme in his work, and this painting employs the figure as a type of measuring device. Gift of John A. Moga [Woodside/Braseth Gallery, Seattle, Washington]; purchased from gallery by John A. Moga, Seattle, Washington, early 1970s; to Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, Washington, 2009 Object number 2009.45
