Priset är det förnämsta internationella utmärkelse som kunde ges för att belöna god industriell formgivning. Braun Transistor är ritad av designern Dieter Rams hos Max Braun Frankfurt / Main, Istället för radiorör har apparaten sju transistorer i varje batteri (som kostade 6 kr) och räckte för 800 1000 lyssningstimmar.
