Shigaraki ware, stoneware with natural ash glaze
Kōyama Yasuhisa began working in a ceramics factory in Shigaraki at age 15. After attending evening classes and studying with individual ceramic artists, he established his own kiln. He became a major force in reviving the single-chamber kiln (anagama), in which his atmospheric sculptures get their colors naturally from the ash of the wood firing.
